Alleged burglar who left apology letters for victims arrested in dam
An accused burglar who left apology letters in his victims' homes has been arrested after police found his bush campsite and hauled him out of a dam as he tried to escape, police said.
It will be alleged he broke into several Sunshine Coast hinterland homes last month and stole jewellery, equipment, sports goods, machinery and power tools worth tens of thousands of dollars.
He left apology notes at two crime scenes, according to police.
Authorities were searching bushland in Eumundi in the Sunshine Coast hinterland on Tuesday and found the 35-year-old Victorian man's remote campsite they had been looking for.
It will be alleged the man ran to his car and tried to make a getaway before abandoning it and running into a nearby dam and became submerged over his head.
Police said officers pulled him out of the water and arrested him.
He was charged with a string of offences including burglary, wilful damage, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, bringing stolen goods into Queensland and possessing dangerous drugs.
The man was expected to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
