PUNE: As many as 16 lives were lost in the past four days in the Pune division, comprising five districts, amid incessant rain.
The casualty was the highest in Satara district. Seven people were killed there. Four deaths were reported in Pune. Two persons each died in Kolhapur and Sangli, and one life was lost in Solapur.
Giving an overview of the flood-like situation, Pune divisional commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar said heavy rainfall was continuing in 30 talukas out of 58 in the division. He said over 50,000 people had to be evacuated in Sangli and Kolhapur districts. Road transport to most areas in these districts were cut off because of water discharge from the dams, he said.
Mhaisekar said many bridges were under water because of the water discharge from Bhima and Krishna river basins. Over 100 villages in Sangli and Kolhapur had no road or rail connectivity, he said.
Panchaganga has been flowing above the danger-level in Kolhapur district. Six villages from Shirol, one each from Hatkanangale, Chikhali and Ambewadi, and Kolhapur city have been affected by it.
Ten teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had been deployed in Kolhapur for rescue operations, he said. The territorial army and Navy have been told to air dash there.
Mhaisekar said the state government was in talks with its Karnataka counterparts regarding increasing the water discharge from Almatti dam from the existing 3.62 lakh cusecs to 4 lakh cusecs.
In view of the Met department forecasting heavy rain till August 10, Mhaisekar said the administration had been asked to keep a close vigil on the situation. He said the flood control cell was active. He said the water release from the dams was being observed minutely.

On the constructions within the blue and red lines, the divisional commissioner said a survey would be carried out after the present situation was addressed. “An aerial survey is on and once the situation is clear, all the structures within the blue and red lines would be issued notices,” he said.
