Pune: Schools and colleges to remain closed today too

Huge water logging and flood situation at different areas in Pune
PUNE: The schools and colleges will remain closed on Tuesday also owing to the heavy rain forecast.
District collector Naval Kishore Ram issued a notification on Monday evening declaring a holiday for educational institutions on Tuesday, too. He said minimal movement was the best way to avoid any calamity amid heavy discharge of water from the dams close to the city and more rain forecast from the Met department.
Schools or colleges not abiding by the order would face action, said the collector on Monday.
Ram said the educational institutions were being closed as a precautionary measure in view of the heavy to extremely heavy rainfall warning sounded by the IMD for Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune, between August 4 and 6. According to the latest forecast for the district, the rainfall may continue till August 8.
The collector said there was forecast for "heavy to very heavy rainfall" for four more days and so caution was necessary. He told citizens not to venture out of homes on these days unless absolutely necessary. He also urged people not to cause any panic among citizens through social media messages.
Ram said the water discharge from the dams would not exceed 1.4 lakh cusecs in the coming days as the danger-level was at 1.8 cusecs and the rain was likely to reduce in the coming days.

The administration evacuated 3,343 families to safe locations, including schools and samaj mandirs, till Monday evening.
"A total of 13,336 people have been shifted across the district safely. The maximum evacuations were in Haveli taluka, especially at Dapodi, Pimpri, Sanghvi, Shantinagar and Patil Estate," said resident deputy collector Jayashree Katare, adding that each family could get Rs6,000 as compensation.
