MADURAI: S Jennifer Chandran, who was the fisheries minister in the 1996- 2001 DMK government in Tamil Nadu, died of renal failure while undergoing treatment in a private hospital here on Tuesday afternoon. She was 62.
Jennifer had been suffering from kidney ailments since 2015 and was in hospital on and off.
Hospital sources said that she was hospitalised on July 22 and was undergoing treatment. But her health deteriorated, and the end came at 2.30pm on Tuesday.
The last rites would be held at Tiruchendur.
Jennifer contested on the DMK ticket from Tiruchendur in the 1996 assembly election. She secured 59,026 votes and beat T Thamotharan of the AIADMK.
In the 2001 assembly election, she lost to AIADMK’s Anitha Radhakrishnan.

In 2004, she joined AIADMK and held various positions, including the party’s state fisherfolk wing joint secretary and Tuticorin district in-charge.
Unhappy over the low profile she had in the AIADMK since 2010, she switched loyalty to the DMK just before the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
