400 tmcft water will be drawn from Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project to irrigate 40 lakh acres

CM K Chandrasekhar Rao inspects the Kaleshwaram project at Medigadda on Tuesday
HYDERABAD: Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said 400 tmcft of water would be drawn soon from Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) to irrigate 40 lakh acres. He also said Kaleshwaram project is nearing completion.
He said the government will have to spend Rs 4,992 crore a year towards power bills to lift such a huge volume of water from various lifts. “But the government need not expend the entire amount on power bills every year. If Yellampaly has sufficient water reserves, water will be drawn directly from Yellampally reservoir. There will be no need to lift water from Medigadda which will reduce the power bill,” the chief minister said at Dharmapuri in Jagtial district after completing an inspection of Kaleshwaram on Tuesday.
He said apart from 400 tmcft, another 175 tmcft of Godavari water would also be lifted from Tupakulagudem and Dummugudem. He said 60 tmcft would be lifted for six months and 40 tmcft for the remaining six months from the project. “For drinking water purposes and industrial needs, 3 tmcft from Yellampally and 2 tmcft from Mid Manair will be lifted daily.”
The chief minister said if Sri Rama Sagar Project (SRSP) project has no water, water would be lifted from Yellampally through a flood flow canal. Arrangements are being made for this. As of now, only 9.6 tmcft is available in SRSP, while there is flood in Medigadda.
He said the government could complete the project despite no financial help from the Centre and overcame problems posed by opposition parties who filed several cases against the project. He termed them as “forces against development” of Telangana.

The chief minister earlier visited Medigadda barrage and Goliwada pumphouse along with senior officials and asked them to be alert and cautious on maintenance of the barrages owing to heavy inflows into Medigadda from Pranahita river.
He later announced Rs 50 crore for developing Dharmapuri temple, which was in addition to Rs 50 crore which had already been sanctioned. He also announced Rs 10 crore for development of Dharmapuri municipality, Rs 10 lakh to each panchayat in Dharmapuri mandal and Rs 25 lakh to each mandal headquarters in Dharmapuri assembly constituency.
