Too many outsourced employees, finds probe; MCG set to axe 200

GURUGRAM: The MCG may soon terminate service of 200 outsourced employees of its various departments. The action is being taken following an inquiry that was ordered last year.
The corporation has been mired in controversy for hiring more than 1,750 outsourced employees, which is seven times more than its approved posts. It has been also alleged that its coffers are being burdened by an unreasonable wage bill. When local councillors demanded an inquiry in MCG House meeting in January 2018, a committee was constituted to probe the hiring process of contract employees.
TOI in its article — MCG outsourced staff shoots up, probe into deal with firm — published on January 18, 2018 had reported how the corporation hired 1,750 contract employees through manpower firms bypassing the norms.
The MCG is now functioning with only 275 staffers, which is less than half the sanctioned strength of 524. The corporation has outsourced 1,750 employees, in addition to 2,000 sanitation workers provided by five private firms. It is paying around Rs 3.75 crore to these 1,750 employees every month.

The panel, headed by ward 34 councillor RS Rathee and four other councillors as members, is likely to submit its report this week. According to sources, the report reveals that most outsourced employees were hired on the recommendations of politicians or senior bureaucrats. Also, most employees are untrained, and are unaware of the rules and regulations of the department where they have been deployed.
Rathee said the panel would submit the report soon. Apart from verifying basic information about their qualifications and experience, the panel probed if these staff members were actually working in the respective departments or their names existed only on paper.
