AHMEDABAD: In Bollywood films, that police reach the crime scene much after the event, is a common trope. A team of city police on Sunday even, however, was at the spot when the crime was still being committed, accidentally of course, as they were patrolling the area to check prohibition violations.
Two cops of Gujarat University police station were patrolling Gulbai Tekra on their motorcycle as part of their prohibition drive. A woman named Trushna Rana, 22, a resident of Astodia Chakla, who works for a jewellery company, was going from her workplace and towards the BRTS stand at Gulbai Tekra.
Two scooter-borne men snatched her mobile phone, worth Rs 7,000, and tried to flee. Rana ran behind them and passersby also began to give chase. The two cops saw that scene and chased down the snatchers on their motorcycle. They managed to grab the pillion rider and recovered the phone.

The man nabbed was identified as Sunil Kantilal Bhil, 22, a resident of Eklavya Society in the Shyamal Crossroads area. His aide, Alpesh Vaghora, a resident of Bhudarpura managed to flee. The investigating officer sub-inspector A B Kale said LRD jawan Ravi Babu and constable Nilesh Mahadev caught the chain snatcher after a chase, when they were patrolling.
Gujarat University police registered a case of loot and abetment against the two men.
