Ministry terms suggestion good and worth considering

A social worker in Alappuzha has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a dedicated portal/website to monitor the day-to-day activities of all MLAs and MPs in the country.

In response to A. Sivasubramanian’s request, the Ministry of Parliament Affairs notes that his suggestions are good and worth considering.

According to him, there is no system or provision to monitor the time spent by people’s representatives on development works in their respective constituencies.

Mr. Sivasubramanian, treasurer, Theosophical Society, Alappuzha, said launching a portal for all MLAs and MPs would help citizens and social groups to access information regarding the development activities in real time and people could give suggestions, if any. “This will serve as a social audit and lead to more accountability,” he added.

People’s right

He said it was the right of the people of a constituency to know how their MLAs and MPs utilise their time during their five-year tenure. “In this era of technological development, the proposal for uploading their daily activities is possible. The government should issue a mandatory order for all MLAs and MPs with immediate effect to create a new MLA/MP portal and upload the details of development works each people’s representative carry out,” said Mr. Sivasubramanian.

He said the daily report should include, for example, meetings with officials regarding infrastructure, health, education, among other development activities. A yearly special summary report should be prepared and uploaded. This can be presented before the people during elections, he noted.

‘Advice from public’

In the letter, Mr. Sivasubramanian suggested that MLAs and MPs seek advice and solutions from citizens and social groups through the portal.

“The portal can be used to interact with panchayats and municipal officials regarding development works,” he added.

Mr. Sivasubramanian also made a representation before Governor P. Sathasivam raising the same demand.
