Unfair to target Jawaharlal Nehru, says Sangareddy MLA

One of the few MLAs from Congress who have responded on the abrogation of Article 370 so far, Sangareddy MLA T. Jagga Reddy has welcomed the move but said it was unfair to target first Prime Minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru in the process.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Mr. Reddy said the decision taken by Mr. Nehru then was as correct as the decision taken by the Modi government now. But for that decision by Mr. Nehru to give special concessions to Kashmiris in those circumstances, Kashmir issue would have been much more complicated now.

India held its present position on Kashmir that it was its integral part was due to the stand taken by Mr. Nehru and Sardar Vallabhai Patel. “We should not blame the then government for the present crisis,” Mr. Reddy said.

Reiterating that Kashmir was an integral part of India and will always be, Mr. Reddy said he had been part of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as well and its stand on Article 370 was always clear and the present government acted in the best interests of the nation.

Mr. Reddy said the country needs Congress for its secularism and also the BJP that is propagating Hindutva politics.
