Law no longer the last option for students, says judge

Suresh K Vontigodi
MYSURU: The many strands of the law make it incumbent on those studying it to cultivate reading habits, said principal district and sessions judge Suresh K Vontigodi here on Monday.
Vontigodi, who inaugurated the orientation programme for the first year law students of the Vidyavardhaka Law College at the institution’s auditorium, said, “Law was once considered the last option for students, but that is not the case today. It presents umpteen numbers of opportunities today. Those trained in law are in huge demand today. It is an extremely exciting option, and there is a perceptible spike in the number of people choosing law.”
The judge also exhorted students to be sticklers for punctuality. “Also, students of law must be very thorough when it comes to understanding of the law, since each legislation offers scope for multiple interpretations. Most importantly, lawyers must possess excellent listening skills. Lawyers must listen to every detail that the client has to offer, and advise them based on what has been divulged,” said Vantigodi.

The judge said that, until recently, many disputes within the family found their way to the law. “That is not the case anymore. Let me state that ignorance of the law cannot be an excuse. Everybody must have at least a basic understanding of the law,” he added.
Head of the department of psychiatry at the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute Dr BN Raveesh touched on the transformations that occurred during the transition of a child into adolescence.
