Dewatering pumps’ failure creates havoc in many areas

Surat: Karadsha ni Naal and Dhastipura areas of the city got flooded with wastewater on Sunday night because the dewatering pumps installed by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) at Makki Pul had failed to function for six hours. Khanderao Pura, Machiwad, Ekta Circle and Katargam-Ved Darwaja too were flooded because there was no outlet for the wastewater.
When the water level in Tapi increased and it began to flow bank to bank in the city, the flow of wastewater into the river stopped. The wastewater began to flood several areas of the central zone. The dewatering pumps were made operational on Monday and consequent upon this, the water began to recede from the localities.

A civic officer said, “Short-circuit in the dewatering pumps had led to delay in the work for around 45 minutes. Things have improved now.”
Former Congress councillor Asad Kalyani said, “It was gross negligence on the part of officials. They should have been prepared for this. It took a full day for the civic staff to clean and spray medicines in the flooded areas. Approximately, 4,000 people were affected by this.”
