Dumping of construction waste in city to attract fine

Dumped debris had become breeding ground for mosquitoes and insects
Rajkot: Dumping of construction waste and debris generated during demolition drives by the civic authorities anywhere will now attract a heavy fine. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Monday made it mandatory that the construction waste be disposed of at designated sites.
While issuing orders in this regard RMC also specified that the penalty for violation of the orders would range from a minimum of Rs 7,500 to a maximum of Rs 1 lakh.
The civic body also set up a separate construction and demolition (C&D) waste cell under the solid waste management department of RMC for this purpose.
The RMC officials said that it was observed that huge amount of construction waste material like pipes, stones, bricks and other debris used to be dumped near construction sites. This not only became nuisance residents but also became breeding ground for mosquitoes, insect and rats.
A statement issued by RMC stated that dumping of debris anywhere was dangerous for the health of citizens. Also, the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporation Act prohibited such activities, it added.

The penalty for dumping waste would be calculated on the quantity and would increase for repeat offenders.
The places designated for dumping the construction waste include plot near Kotharia police chowkey, mining area at of Raiya smart city, near PGVCL office on Dhebar road, near IOC godown in Popatpara, Smart Industrial Area near ST workshop, near Raiyadhar garbage station and behind Pradhuman Greens.
