More Details About Ford’s New 7.3L V8 Engine

We’ve known for a while that Ford is working on a new V8 engine, and we know what its displacement will be: the engine that will debut in the Super Duty truck series for 2020 is a 7.3L unit.

This past week the company revealed more details about the engine’s output.

Buyers getting a Super Duty truck with this new engine will benefit from 430 hp at 5,500 RPM, as well as 475 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM.

Among the innovations featuring in the new mill is the presence of an overhead valve configuration, designed to maximize torque at low RPM. A variable-displacement oil pump allows for adjusting the flwo or oil depending in what the engine needs. The unit also gets a forged-steel crankshaft and a jet system for the pistons to reduce the temperature when the truck is working strenuously.

The F-250 and F-350 models will be the first to get the new 7.3L engine. Unfortunately we still don’t know the numbers relating to load and towing capacities; these should be announced a little farther down the road. In fact, we should learn when Ford announces details for the improved version of the  6.7L Power Stroke diesel V8 engine that will come into service for then next model-year.
