KMCH makes state’s organ pool richer

Coimbatore: The number of organs the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) contributed to the organ pool in the state has gone up from eight in 2012 to 16 organs in the first half of 2019 alone, hospital sources said. In 2013, the hospital had contributed 71 organs to the pool.
Member secretary of the Transplant Authority Government of Tamil Nadu (Transtan) Dr Kanthimathi said KMCH has been the largest contributor to the organ donation pool in the western region in the last two decades.
Speaking at the event on Sunday, where Transtan officials and collector K Rajamani appreciated the families who took the decision to donate the organs of their loved ones to save another person’s life, Kanthimathi said, “These families made a great sacrifice in their darkest hour and this sacrifice has made Tamil Nadu the pioneer and the leader in the deceased donor organ donation activity.”

Rajamani assured that the grievances of the families would be seriously looked into for any possible assistance. He honoured the families with a certificate of appreciation.
Dean of the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) Dr B Ashokan stressed the importance of increasing awareness about brain death. “The cadaver donation rates, which have stagnated over the last two years in the state, has to be increased,” he said.
