Bihar BJP may extend deadline to enrol new members

PATNA: The state BJP, in consultation with its central leadership, might extend the last date of its membership drive beyond August 11 due to floods in 13 districts of north Bihar.
“Our membership drive has been going on briskly in all the 38 districts, but the flash flood in 13 districts created unforeseen problems. Normal life was completely disrupted,” state BJP spokesman Azfar Shamsi said on Sunday.
“In this situation, the state BJP might request the party’s central unit to extend the last date of the membership drive. But the decision has to be taken at the highest level,” Shamsi added.
The conclusion of the membership drive on a positive note is important for the BJP as all other major parties like JD(U), RJD and Congress have also launched their membership drive before their organizational elections for the 2019-22 period to be held by October-November this year.
As it is, the state BJP had 80 lakh members during the 2016-19 period, but its national general secretary and Bihar affairs incharge Bhupender Yadav has given the target to the state unit to add at least 25 lakh new members. However, informally, the party’s rank and file has been working to add 45 lakh new members, given the increased popular enthusiasm in favour of the BJP after the formation of the second NDA government at the Centre under PM Narendra Modi.
Shamsi said the party has also laid special stress on enrolling Muslim youths and women as members. “After the passage of Triple Talaq Bill in the Rajya Sabha and the President’s consent to it to become an Act, there is palpable interest among Muslim women and youths in the BJP. The party has been reaching out to them for their enrolment,” he added.

Meanwhile, as the office of the state’s chief electoral officer has set January 15 as the deadline for the publication of revised electoral roll, all the political parties have also been activated to enrol new voters who attained the age of 18 years on January 1, 2020. The political parties concerned have to do it through their respective booth level agents (BLAs). The state has 72,200 polling booths.
Surprisingly, as sources in the state BJP’s election office said, the RJD has highest number of listed BLAs in the state at 50,000, followed by the BJP’s 38,000, and JD(U)’s around 25,000. “This time, we would also increase the number of our BLAs,” a state BJP source said.
