PUNE: An engineering college student out to celebrate friendship day drowned in a farm pond at
Bangarwadi in
Junnar taluka, about 100km from Pune, on Sunday afternoon.
The Ale Phata police identified the deceased as Shyam Rajendra Ghodke (19) of Yeola in
Nashik district. “Shyam was among the eight students who had gone to the site on the occasion of friendship day. He was pursuing first-year engineering degree course and was staying on the college premises,” an officer of the Ale Phata police said.
The police have registered a case of accidental death in this regard. “The students left the college campus on Sunday afternoon to visit a hill located about 2km from the college as a part of a small tour on the occasion of friendship day. The group came across the farm pond near the hill, following which Shyam expressed his wish to swim in the waters of the pond,” the officer said.
Shyam swam for a few minutes before drowning. “We suspect that he failed to come out of the pond due to slippery polythene sheet spread it to store the water. He was a good swimmer,” the officer added.
