Xiaomi’s Redmi brand will introduce its new camera technology for smartphones on August 7, according to an announcement via Weibo. It is expected that the 64MP camera system could be revealed by the Redmi brand. The poster shared by Xiaomi has the Redmi logo embedded on it as well, which means the new camera technology and the 64MP camera phone will be under this sub-brand.

The August 7 launch event comes even as Xiaomi VP and Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing talked about the Redmi Note 8 in a separate Weibo post. He stated that the “Redmi Note 8 is much stronger than the next door…” according to Google Translate, though he did not reveal any more specifications for the phone.

Given that Xiaomi has a shorter refresh cycle with Redmi Note phones, it won’t be surprising if the new phones are announced on August 7. After all the Redmi Note 7 series was launched in January 2019, with the Redmi Note 7 Pro being introduced for India in February.

Still, Xiaomi could just talk about the new camera technology and not actually release the upcoming smartphone, and that event could take place at a later date. Previously, Xiaomi confirmed it was working on a smartphone that will comes with a 64MP sensor from Samsung. For now, Xiaomi’s Weibo post does not officially confirm what will be revealed on August 7, other than hinting at the camera and image quality.

Keep in mind that the Redmi Note 7 was the company’s first smartphone to feature a 48MP camera setup on the back and Xiaomi would try and improve this with the next variant in the Redmi Note series. This is why it is expected that the Redmi Note 8 will have the 64MP camera.

Xiaomi is expected to use the Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor that was announced earlier this year to achieve the 64MP camera setup. The Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor can descramble its colour filter to deliver full-size 64MP photos.

To recall, Realme has also confirmed that it is working on a 64MP smartphone, which it will be launching on August 8 in India. A new leak has also come out stating that Samsung is also working on a Galaxy A series smartphone, which will be the first smartphone from the company to feature a 64MP camera on the back.
