Kolkata: Drunk driver a repeat offender

The SUV driven by Swapan Mondal that dashed two persons in Jodhpur Park on Friday
KOLKATA: The driver of the SUV which ran over a cyclist and a pedestrian in a Jodhpur Park neighbourhood on Friday evening, has multiple cases of rash and negligent driving against him and has not been able to provide a driving licence to the cops till now. The 27-year-old accused, Swapan Mondal, also has three citation cases of over speeding and there are five instances of signal violation against the vehicle — a Renault Duster — which he has been driving for the past few years.
“We have not found a driving licence with him and he said it had been seized in an earlier case of traffic violation. But he has not specifically submitted any document or proof to bolster his claim. We are checking all the nearby traffic guards to see if he has any past case of drink driving or hit-and-run against him. We will be mentioning these findings in the case diary and it will only strengthen the case against him,” said an officer.
The incident has left residents of Jodhpur Park scared. Since Friday night, they have called the cops on multiple occasions to reassess the illumination, road width and police vigil in the area.
Acting on the complaints, a team of officers from southeast traffic guard and Lake police station conducted a survey on illumination and road space in the neighbourhood and have intensified patrol in the alleys of Jodhpur Park. “Along with increasing the number of policemen manning traffic in the alleys of Jodhpur Park, we also conducted an anti-drink driving campaign in the area on Saturday night, focusing on the bylanes and the roads connecting them,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police traffic department.
Mondal has been booked under IPC sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 279 (rash and negligent driving) and sections dealing with drink driving. He was produced in an Alipore court on Saturday and had been remanded in police custody till August 8.
“When we got him out of the car after the accident, he was reeking of alcohol. We got him tested on a breathalyser later and the measure value was 185mg, almost six times the permissible blood-alcohol content limit — 30mg of alcohol in 100ml blood,” said an officer of the southeast traffic guard, who were the first to reach the scene of crime on Friday.
A resident of Prince Anwar Shah Road, Mondal is unmarried and lives in a one-room house near Dada Pir Sahab Majar with his mother and sister.

“His family, too, has said that he had a drinking problem,” said an officer.
Over the past two months, cops have launched a campaign against drink driving, helmetless riding and unsafe driving across the city. “We have been trying our best to educate drivers across the city about the perils of drink driving and have been prosecuting them with stern penalty. But if the drivers still don’t learn their lessons, such accidents are difficult to prevent,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
