One of the accused arrested, two others are absconding

A Special Police Officer (SPO) with the Gurugram Police was shot at while foiling an attempt by three people to abduct a man at Atul Kataria Chowk on Saturday night. The police officer is said to be stable.

One of the accused has been arrested while the other two are absconding.

Anshul, a wrestler, was arrested a few hours after the incident. He is involved in several criminal cases in Haryana and Delhi, and has confessed to having shot at SPO Jaivir Singh, said the police.

Anshul and his accomplices were driving around in their car looking for a possible victim when they hit a luxury car vehicle from behind at Atul Kataria Chowk around 11 p.m., said the police. When the man in the car, later identified as a relative of a liquor trader, got down, the trio tried to push him inside their vehicle to abduct him for ransom.

Deployed at roundabout

A police team deployed at the roundabout to manage the movement of Kanwariyas rushed to the spot when they heard the man screaming for help. The accused attempted to drive away in the victim’s luxury car but could not escape as two cars coming from the opposite direction blocked the way. As the accused tried to flee, Mr. Singh caught up to the car and opened the rear door when he was shot in the stomach by one of the accused.

Anshul allegedly told the police that he along with his two accomplices, including a woman, had stolen an SUV from Panipat in July and had come to Gurugram to steal another car.

The accused, who dropped out from college, had allegedly stolen a car in Jhajjar in 2013. He was arrested and spent over three months in jail where he came in contact with Pradeep Dhaiya, a notorious criminal. He spent 18 months in Tihar Jail in an attempt to murder case in 2014. He was twice arrested by the Delhi Police in 2017 for possessing illegal weapons.

Gurugram Police Commissioner Muhammad Akil awarded appreciation letters and ₹5,000 in cash to each of the nine policemen for foiling the abduction, and arresting one of the accused.
