NEW DELHI:
Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is trying to transform the
Sanjay Lake near Mayur Vihar into one of the biggest recreational hubs of east Delhi.
The land-owning agency had started the ecological restoration of Sanjay
Lake — one the largest green areas in east Delhi — a few months ago and is on the verge of completing Phase I of the project. A DDA official said that work on Phase II of the restoration project will soon start and cover the entire 170 acres of the lake area, which includes greens within the lake itself, spread over 52.3 acres.
“Work is being done in phases and Phase I is almost complete. An amphitheatre is now ready, walking and cycling tracks are ready and greening in one portion is complete,” DDA vice-chairman Tarun Kapoor told TOI.
Apart from the huge green area that surrounds the water body, DDA has been constantly focussed on properly maintaining the lake, which according to Kapoor is itself a Herculean task. “The water in the lake gets dirty as unclean water gets mixed with it. We are going to set up a sewage treatment plant nearby to ensure that the water entering the lake is clean,” he added.
“Sanjay Lake has always been a recreational area and lot people have been coming here for years. However, we are now trying to improve the entire surrounding so that it becomes one of the best recreational areas in the city and definitely the best in east Delhi,” the vice-chairman said.
Kapoor said that in about a year’s time, a host of new facilities being planned around the lake will come up but the complete rejuvenation of the lake and surrounding greens will take over a year given the huge expanse of the area.
A DDA official said the entire area has been redesigned with a theme of continuous lines, which signify “movement, punctuated with nodes or areas signifying moments”. “We have worked on a philosophy of creating memorable destinations within the green, building on the role of Sanjay Lake as a place dedicated to engaging the public in the development of a new cultural identity on one of the waterfronts in the city through artistic expression,” he added.
The facilities being planned include nature trails, bicycle tracks, pedestrian pathways, an amphitheatre, lake view plazas and courts, food court, observation deck, meditation garden and an open gym.
To encourage art in a public space, the agency plans to create an artist court, sculpture court and a craft hut.
