JAIPUR: A 35-year-old rape survivor is battling for her life with 60 per cent burn injuries after she set herself on fire in the city’s Vaishali Nagar police station alleging inaction by cops. She is currently undergoing treatment at the burns ward of the SMS Hospital where her condition remains critical.
Talking to TOI, the woman’s husband said she had registered an FIR under Section 376 (rape) against a 29-year-old youth two months ago. The FIR, he claimed, gathered dust and police did not arrest the accused.
“For the past two months, the investigation has not moved even an inch. Instead, police targeted my wife and hounded her as though she was an accused. One ACP had been forcing her to withdraw the case. Fed up, she set herself on fire on Sunday,” he said.
“She had come to the police station accompanied by her son on Sunday. Suddenly, she set herself on fire. She was immediately rushed to the hospital,” said Sanjay Godara, SHO of Vaishali Nagar police station.
Asked about the current status of her FIR and the family’s allegation against the cops, a police officer said that the case was still at investigation stage.

“We had quickly registered the FIR against the accused, who happens to be her relative. But some new facts emerged during the investigation, which needed to be corroborated,” the officer said on condition of anonymity.
A magistrate has recorded the woman’s statements at the hospital.
