MOHALI: Stale and maggot-infested kitchen waste food caused the death of 97 cattle head in three days at two dairy farms in Kandala village in the district, according to preliminary post-mortem report of some of the cattle.
Jarnail Singh Raju and Tarsem Lal, the owners of the two farms, however claimed 80 buffaloes and 45 cows had died, causing them a loss of over Rs 1 crore. On the other hand, the administration has pegged the death count at 27 only —19 buffalos, five cows and three calves.
Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Jagdeep Saigal on Sunday said the inquiry prima facie revealed these milch animals were given
stale food — kitchen waste collected from hotels and restaurants.
“An animal husbandry team has been treating the sick animals for three days,” the SDM said. Teams of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, and Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Jalandhar have arrived. The SDM said, “The owners of the farms have admitted they gave kitchen waste which is cheaper in cost than green fodder. The greed to increase the yield of milk at lesser price proved deadly. We are preparing our final report and further action will be initiated once it is submitted to the
Mohali deputy commissioner.”
CM orders probeDeputy commissioner Girish Dayalan on Sunday ordered additional deputy commissioner (D) to conduct a probe into the death of 97 cattle head in two dairy farms in Kandala village on the directions of chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh.
