A video of the aftermath on Twitter revealed that people were left on the ground with spattered blood and medics were tending to their wounds.
The chaotic situation unfolded at the popular food festival and the number of victims was not immediately confirmed and no details were provided by the police.
The number of shooters involved was still unclear and one suspect was taken into custody. It was tweeted by the Gilroy police several hours after the shots rang out the scene was still active and they asked people to stay away.
A heavily wooded area near the festival was being searched and the , and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives San Francisco office and the FBI sent investigators to Gilroy.
Gov. Gary Newsom tweeted that this is nothing short of horrific and CA was with the Gilroy community.

Julissa Contreras said that she could spot a white male in the mid or early 30s and was firing a semiautomatic weapon and she could hear three to four shots per second. The shooter was wearing a cap, sunglasses and had clips strapped to him.
He seemed to be prepared for what he was doing he came in near a service entrance between booths where one had kids coming down an inflatable slide. With his back to them, he started spraying the crowd.
The shooting was heard and after the eight shot they realized that it was not the firecrackers. They took shelter behind the row of tents.
She said that she could see him shooting in every direction, and the kids were just running out of the slide frantically as he appeared to be spraying the crowd.
The festival ran for three days and as it was winding down it had only 300 people. According to the early reports as per the ambulance crews that 11 people were down at the Gilroy’s Christmas Hill Park.
