KANPUR: With Kanpur receiving 435mm rainfall till now during the monsoon season, Saturday’s showers ended the city’s
rain deficit. With just a couple of days left in July, the rain gauge is expected to record a higher reading.
The average rainfall recorded in July in Kanpur is 365 mm.
Chandra Shekhar University of Agriculture and Technology’s (CSUAT) meteorological department was earlier apprehensive that the city might receive scanty rainfall this year, but weather gods have been kind so far. Till Saturday 3pm, the rain gauge recorded a reading of 66.2mm
In the month of July, Kanpur received its heaviest rainfall on July 6 at 79.4 mm. At 54.8mm, the city recorded its second highest level of rainfall on July 10.
The rainy spell after July 20, commenced from July 24 when the rain gauge recorded was 21.6mm. On July 25 and 26, the rain gauge was 20.6 mm and 30.2 mm respectively.
Saturday’s downpour also led to waterlogging in and power outtage in several areas. Lanes in prominent areas like Swaroopnagar, Aryanagar and Civil Lines were flooded after the intermittent rains.
The district administration said that rain had also taken a toll on the ongoing road repair work in the city and that the construction would resume only after the monsoon season concluded. The delay is likely to add to commuters’ problems, who are already struggling with pothole-ridden roads. Snapping electric wires led to
marathon power cuts throughout the day. It took
Kanpur Electricity Supply Company hours to restore the power supply.
Weather experts predicted that rain is likely on Sunday too.
