PUNE: The city
traffic police have launched a website to provide information on traffic and other related issues.
The website — www.PuneTrafWatch.com — will serve as a means to identify traffic and related issues within the city as well as a platform for coordination between various agencies involved in road and traffic infrastructure.
Deputy Commissioner of police (traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh said the website will enable citizen engagement and provide them with information on live traffic across the city. It will also display areas with chronic traffic violations and poor civic infrastructure, among others.
“We received over 3.5 lakh hits on the webpage we had created for Palkhi processions. Pune TrafWatch will enable citizens in accessing ground data. They can then engage the data to trigger action instead of engaging in one-to-one grievance redressal on social media,” Deshmukh said.
He added that the website will act as a platform to coordinate with agencies like the
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and others involved in road infrastructure.
“The website will host actionable data collected by using geo-tagged images, which can be used by citizens and authorities. We are starting with nearly 35,000 images of 47 main roads and 265 important junctions. The reach will be expanded over time,” said Navrisham Kaur from ChangeBhai — a ground data analytics start-up that developed the website.
Kaur said the information on the website will invoke action from the authorities concerned. “The website will be help authorities in identifying problems including fading road markings, missing or damaged signages. Civic issues and infrastructure hampering traffic have also been mapped. It will also help residents in locating parking spaces and blind spots, among others,” she added.
Citizens can also share issues on the portal. “The website will use analytics to show the top five problems from each road. Citizens can share issues in their areas with brief descriptions,” said Mayuri Mehta from ChangeBhai.
Kaur and Mehta said the website does not rely on citizens for the images. But their participation will create a network for sharing images of
road conditions. It will be translated to Hindi and Marathi soon.
