With the motor vehicle accident rates in India at a sustained high, the Govt. of India will be implementing some controlling measures soon. If these proposed changes to the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act 1988 are implemented, we could soon see a significant spike in the fines for traffic violations, as well as improvements in road infrastructure and reducing congestion among others. Without further ado, let’s get down to the changes we might see in the mobility structure.

First and the foremost proposal is an increase in fines for traffic violations, which should discourage commuters from making dangerous maneuvers on the road.

NHAI to undertake clearance of roadside hoardings which obscure traffic signs or divert the attention of highway drivers.

Offenses such as stop sign and red light violation, use of mobile while driving, dangerous overtakes and driving on the wrong side will pinch more at Rs 10,000 from earlier Rs 2,000.

Drivers who do not give way to an emergency services vehicle, needlessly blare the horn on the road and in areas prohibiting the use of horn shall be imprisoned for up to six months or incur a Rs 10,000 fine or even both.

The Government will also be focussing on reducing gridlocks and improving traffic flow, which not only wastes time but also valuable oil resources.

The bill also has suggestions for improving electric adoption and shared mobility by reducing the cost of travel through cab aggregators.

The bill also proposes to establish a mandatory insurance cover for all through a Motor Vehicle Accident Fund which will be funded by the Centre. This amount will be credited to the family members of road accident fatalities. Last year, the government had made a three-year third-party insurance a mandatory add-on for new car buyers.
It is about time the Government took a high-handed approach to the increasingly dangerous Indian road conditions. If the proposal has the intended effect, we might end up getting rid of our dubious distinction of having the highest road fatalities in the world.
