Pune: As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall in the State will continue till July-end. IMD officials have stated that good rainfall will continue in the first week of August as well.

Between 8:30 pm on Friday till 8:30 pm on Saturday, Pune recorded 106.1 millimeter rainfall. Since 2009, it is the highest recorded rainfall in 24 hours for the month of July.

Anupam Kashyapi, Head of weather at IMD Pune, said that various parts of the State will continue to get good rains.“Konkan and Goa region will have widespread rainfall till July 31. Whereas, central Maharashtra will witness widespread rainfall till July 29. Marathwada region will also have widespread rainfall till July 28. For July 28, there is also a warning issued for Marathwada as well. For Vidarbha also, widespread rainfall is forecasted till July 28,” said Kashyapi.

He further added that in Konkan and Goa, on July 29 and July 30, there is isolated very heavy to heavy rainfall followed by heavy rainfall warning on July 31.

“In Central Maharashtra, fairly widespread rainfall is forecast on July 30 and 31. Ghat areas are expected to get isolated extremely heavy rainfalls. In Marathwada, scattered rains are forecast on July 30 and July 31. Whereas, a heavy rainfall warning is issued for July 28. For Vidarbha, fairly widespread rainfall is forecast on July 29 and July 30 followed by widespread rainfall on July 31,” said Kashyapi.

Explaining the reason for good rains since Friday, Kashyapi said that the monsoon trough is strong.“On the Arabian Sea front, there is a packed isobar, which has created a pressure gradient. With strong west westerlies winds over the coastal areas, it is creating a convergence over Konkan and Goa as well as parts of north and central Madhya Maharashtra resulting in good rains,” he said.

August to begin with good rains
Kashyapi said that there is also a low pressure area over Bay of Bengal, which will strengthen after July 31. “This low pressure area will enhance rainfall activity further in the State,” said Kashyapi.

Rainfall in Pune and Mumbai
Kashyapi said that in Mumbai, for July 28, an extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places warning has been issued. “By extremely heavy, it means at least 20.5 centimetre or more rainfall may be reported. On July 29, at few places, scattered rainfall is forecast. For Pune, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is forecast till July 28,” he said.
