Pune: Residents of landslide-prone villages seek shift to safety

The residents of Malin were rehabilated in Amde in 2017
PUNE: Residents of 10 “critical” landslide-prone villages in Ambegaon, Maval, Velha and Bhor talukas in Pune district refused corrective measures initiated by the district administration and demanded rehabilitation similar to that of Malin village.

A massive landslide buried Malin village in 2014, claiming 151 lives. Nearly three years after the tragedy, the kin of those killed in the incident were rehabilitated two km away in Amde village in permanent earthquake-resistant structures.
Last year, the district administration commenced “corrective measures” in all the 10 ‘critical’ landslide-prone villages, but the residents, through their representatives, demanded that they be rehabilitated to another area.

Pune district collector Naval Kishore Ram told TOI that while the administration was working on the corrective measures, the demand to shift the residents to another area will again have to be placed before the state government.
“No amount of corrective measures will help and, we have to be rehabilitated in some other area,’’ said an Ambegaon resident.
