PUNE: Clicking photographs with gushing waters cost an 18-year-old his life after Indrayani river’s strong current swept him away at Indori village, near Talegaon Dabhade, on Saturday morning.
Police identified the deceased as Sourabh Kalge. His family hails from
Belgaum in Karnataka. They had shifted to Chakan in search of jobs. His father worked as a driver with a transport operator.
Kalge was visiting the riverside area, locally known as Kundmala, with two friends. Around 8am, he was taking “selfies” with Indrayani River’s gushing waters in the backdrop when he slipped and fell.
Officers from the Talegaon MIDC police station and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officials rushed to the spot. The villagers and his friends confirmed that Kalge was swept away while taking selfies with the gushing waters.
The police and NDRF teams conducted searches along the river bank and downstream of the river for several hours. However, the operation was called off after water hyacinth and muddy water kept gushing at the site.
Officers at the Talegaon and Kamshet police stations said waters in the
Indrayani River reached dangerous levels on Friday and Saturday. The villagers were thronging at the river side to see the waters. Many bridges have gone under water. Officers have been deployed to avert accidents.
