'We sold out within a week': Designer, 26, behind the $200 boho rugs taking Instagram by storm reveals why her creations have become a 'must-have' for beach picnics

  • Eliza Boyd is the founder of newly minted Australian rug company Earth Covers
  • The 26-year-old from Geelong, Victoria, has sold over 300 rugs in the past year
  • She came up with the idea when she went to the beach with friends one day
  • And now influencers like Elyse Knowles, Sally Mustang and Edi Bee are fans

In early 2018, Eliza Boyd, from Victoria, was looking for a beautiful picnic blanket she could set up on the beach in summer but was struggling to find a style she liked.

Many of the practical rugs were 'cheaply made' with plastic and didn't fit the boho aesthetic she was looking for.

So instead of continuing her search the 26-year-old from Geelong made her own called Earth Covers, that are sustainable, washable and the perfect backdrop for an Instagram picture.

Many of her designs can be spotted on the living room floor, giving a rustic look to any home, while others make for a great lazing spot when you're soaking up the sun rays

The rugs, which range in price from $199 to $229, are a hit with influencers like Elyse Knowles, Sally Mustang and Edi Bee.

'I sell out of the Gypsy Sunset and Lucid Dreams within one week of them being online,' Eliza, who has a degree in fashion design, told Femail.

Describing how there was 'absolutely nothing around' when she first started looking she has made a versatile product that can go from the home to the beach and back again.

'I wanted something lightweight but still durable enough for the home and able to be reused time and time again,' she said.

'The patterns need to meet the criteria of dreamy and boho - just anything I know our customer will love and compliment their style. Being the customer myself and having a design background makes it a lot easier.'

She has sold 300, not including wholesale, so far and gets excited every time she sees a stranger carrying one of her rugs down to the ocean.

'Even friends and family saying they want one makes my heart melt,' she said.

'Being able to show how beautiful these rugs and and the experiences you can have if you own one is what really sells it,' she said.

At the moment she's mainly focused on keeping the rugs in stock but in the future she hopes to look into making larger sizes, pillows and even renting out the set for events.
