PUNE: As rains continued to lash Pune for the second consecutive day, life across the city has been thrown out of gear. Road and rail traffic in and out of the city have been affected due to the downpour of 110 mm recorded in the city since 8.30am on Friday morning.
Four trains from the city to various destinations including Mumbai, Ernakulum and Ahmedabad were cancelled while several others were diverted or short-terminated due to flooding in parts of Mumbai. The Mumbai-bound
Mahalaxmi Express with nearly 800 passengers on board was stranded near
Badlapur soon after it proceeded from Pune. A team of the 5th Battalion of the
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from RCC Mumbai was moved to Badlapur to rescue stranded passenger.
Meanwhile, several incoming flights to Pune were delayed due to the rains but airport authorities confirmed that no cancellation or diversions to flights have been made so far.
Road traffic across the city has also been slow moving since morning with waterlogging witnessed in several parts. Residents from Wagholi, Hinjewadi, Deccan and several other areas complained of congestion leading to long delays in commute time.
The famous Morya Gosavi Temple at Chinchwad was half submerged in flood water by noon while a portion of a wall of the Z Bridge in Deccan collapsed due to the incessant rain. A tree branch collapse was also reported near Shringeri Matt, off Paud Road earlier in the day.
While traffic along the Mumbai–Pune expressway has been normal, citizens complained about heavy traffic along the Pune–Satara highway near
Khed Shivapur.
