In case you missed it: Handbag thief recap

Police have released images of a man who used a large cardboard box to steal designer bags from a CBD hotel worth $200,000.

The man entered the Little Collins Street hotel, used a swipe card in the lift and selected all floors which eventually gained him access to a privately owned apartment on the higher floors.

He was in the apartment for about 30 minutes before leaving with a small suit case and the box stuffed with stolen loot.

The man, wearing a black hoodie, got back into the lift and left the building via Coates Lane and struggled with the box, dropping some of the bags onto the street, before getting into a taxi and fleeing the scene.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Heat wave in Europe

If your social media channels are anything like mine, they will be flooded with happy snaps of friends basking in the European summer at this time of year. How lovely for them, you think, as you trudge through the rain on your way to work.

But how hot is too hot? Some countries in central Europe are experiencing their highest temperatures in recorded history this week. In Paris, record highs of 42.6 degrees are forecasted and 3AW reported the Netherlands will have it's hottest day ever today.

Lucky to be alive

These days, we're always told to be in the present, live in the now. Appreciate all the things we have, not have not.

But perhaps nothing hits that message home more than knowing we all came close to experiencing the wrath of 30 times the energy of Hiroshima's atomic blast yesterday.

Science reporter Liam Mannix's exclusive story looks into the once-in-a-decade event where a 100m wide asteroid came close to hitting Earth, and how scientists almost missed it.
