Meeting discusses 24/7 water supply project implementation

Coimbatore: The city corporation, along with Suez India Private Limited, on Friday conducted a meeting with the officials of several government departments seeking their co-operation for the smooth execution of the 24/7 drinking water supply project.
As many as 28 officials representing the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), state highways department, city police, traffic police and BSNL attended the meeting.
Under the project, pipelines would be laid for 1,820km1,742km of distribution network and 78km feeder main networkcovering 105sqkm to provide water connection to two lakh buildings. “The corporation has urged the highways department to share details pertaining to their projects like road widening and flyover construction so that we could start laying pipelines at those locations in advance,” said a source privy to the project.
Similarly, the civic body requested TNEB and BSNL to share details of utilities with the corporation and the contractor, so that they can be sure where the cables are passing through. “We want to ensure that the cables are not damaged while we dig up roads to lay pipelines,” the source said.
The project map showing the locations where pipes would be laid was shared with the officials. TNEB and BSNL officials were urged to mark their utilities on the map. “The utilities would be marked in the geographical information survey (GIS) of the company so that the exact location of the networks will be known,” the source said.

The traffic police department sought information about the work schedule to set up alternate routes to reduce traffic congestion.
Meanwhile, the private firm has decided to issue uniform and safety gear like jackets, shoes and helmet to the 150 employees, including pump operator, fitters and housekeeping staff, involved in the project.
