JAIPUR: A 15-year-old
student undergoing vedic studies at an
ashram in Bassi was found
hanging by his teachers on Thursday early morning.
Shivam Sharma, a resident of Jaisinghpura Khor area, was studying in the ashram for past five years. The Bassi police said they are treating the death as a suicide case, albeit, no suicide note was recovered from his hostel room. His teachers claimed that on Wednesday night he had distributed prasad in the hostel and said that his last sankalp (vow) was now completed.
Talking to TOI, his father Manmohan Sharma who drives a school van, said, that he had spoken to Shivam on Wednesday night, but his son did not mention about anything troubling him. “I and my wife had spoken to him at about 7.30pm on Wednesday. He spoke to us about everyday life in the ashram. He did not reveal if he was being harassed there or if he was in some kind of problem,” he said, adding that he has requested police to check what compelled Shivam to take an extreme step all of a sudden.
The police told TOI that the doctors who conducted post-mortem did not find any major wounds or fatal injuries. Shivam’s neighbour, Ghyamsham, however, claimed that he had seen bruises on the deceased’ legs. Shivam’s teachers at the ashram told TOI he was a shy student who largely kept to himself. “On Wednesday night, Shivam told one of the inmates that his last sankalp (vow) was complete. On Thursday morning, we were carrying out rituals at the temple when we saw his body hanging in a shed,” said Krishna Murari, one of Shivam’s teachers.
While Shivam’s relatives alleged that he was harassed by other students, the teachers denied that and said that he never shared anything with them. “Neither Shivam nor his parents ever complained to us about problems he was facing,” Murai said. Manmohan Sharma told TOI that about five months ago his son had complained to him that other inmates were not letting him use cellphone. “I had gone to the ashram and the matter was resolved. After that no issue came to my notice,” he said.
