Starz Renews The Girlfriend Experience for Season 3

Starz has picked up a third season of Steven Soderbergh's anthology series The Girlfriend Experience. The news was announced Friday by Jeffrey Hirsch, STARZ's chief operating officer, at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

The new 10-episode season is written and directed by Anja Marquardt (She's Lost Control) and will be set in the London tech scene. It follows a young female neuroscientist as she begins to explore the world of the Girlfriend Experience, "only to find herself in the Uncanny Valley with the relationships she creates," according to the network. Soderbergh and Philip Fleishman will return as executive producers.

Additionally, Soderbergh will also executive-produce the new Starz docuseries Leavenworth alongside Paul Pawlowski and David Check. The true-crime series is a first-hand account of former lieutenant Clint Lorance, who is serving a 19-year sentence for murder after he, while deployed in Afghanistan in 2012, ordered fire on three local men riding a motorcycle, killing two of them. Lorance seeks to overturn his conviction, sparking an emotional debate between supporters and detractors. As his fate unfolds, Starz notes that "questions probe not only the merits of his conviction, but analyze the system at large and ultimately test the balance of guilt and innocence in the inscrutable circumstances of today's wars." The series will premiere Oct. 20.

Lastly, Starz also announced it has ordered to series Dangerous Liaisons, a new show inspired by the famous novel. It will tell the origin story of Merteuil and Valmont when they meet as young lovers in 18th century Paris. The story is told from the perspective of Merteuil and is informed by her line from the novel that reads, "Born to avenge my sex and conquer yours, I have succeeded in inventing strategies for doing so that before me had never been conceived."
