PUNE: A major
fire gutted a
godown stacked with oil and food products at Dandekarnagar in Yevlewadi at Kondhwa on Friday around 7.15am.
The fire also engulfed two vehicles parked outside the godown. No casualties were reported.
Fire brigade officials could not ascertain the cause behind the fire.
The rented godown admeasuring around 6,000 sq ft is run by Vinit Rathi and Vilas Mundada, partners of Sakshi Trade Link company involved in distributing fast moving consumer goods to retailers in local market.
Two fire tenders from Kondhwa sub stations initially rushed to the spot after receiving information from the public that thick black fumes were emanating from the godown.
Station duty officer Prakash Gore of the central fire brigade said, “The godown was packed with oil and food products and closed from all sides. We don’t known from which point the fire broke. We summoned seven fire tenders, five mini tenders, five water tankers because the magnitude of the fire was huge. We used an earth moving machine belonging to a private party and removed the tin sheds covering the godown and started spraying water from all sides for brining the fire under control.”
Gore said,“We simultaneously sprayed water on other workshops around the godown to prevent the fire from spreading further. Around 60 firemen were pressed into service and the fire was doused off around 9.20am. The godown was completely gutted in fire.”
The godown had two fire extinguishers but it could not be put into use as no security guards were deployed, he added.
Vikas Partner, one of the partners told TOI,“The fire has destroyed the godown and most of the goods. I don’t known the cause behind the fire. We have installed fire extinguishers but the magnitude of fire was so enormous that we did not get a chance to go inside the godown. We have not appointed security guards. We are calculating the loss caused to the godown and goods.”
