Runaway Tire Hits Jeep Wrangler Head-On

A driver in New Jersey caught a terrifying accident on video that looks like it was straight out of the Final Destination film franchise.

As you can see in the clip, a large tire was caught rolling down the middle of Route 440 on Wednesday. The tire eventually left the roadway and hit a concrete divider.

Instead of stopping the tire in its tracks, the tire hopped up onto the divider and bounced on several of them. The tire then entered into oncoming traffic and hit a Jeep Wrangler head-on.

According to ABC 7, the Wrangler was being driven by John Rice who was following behind his wife and children which were in a car ahead of him. He told the station that the tire clipped his wife’s car and then bounced directly into his Wrangler.

While Rice saw the tire coming, there wasn’t much he could do to avoid being hit. Thankfully he wasn’t seriously injured, even though his wife “initially feared he was dead.”

The New Jersey State Police are investigating the accident and are trying to determine where the tire came from. Initial speculation suggests it might have come from a dump truck – possibly the one seen at the start of the video.

Regardless of where the tire came from, Rice’s Jeep suffered extensive damage. The entire front end of the Wrangler was effectively destroyed as the grille was smashed and the passenger side front fender was peeled back. The hood also damaged, but thankfully Rice escaped with his life.
