She tried to take advantage of an attempted burglary in her locality, police said

Late on Monday night, beat constables from the Kuppam Urban police station spotted a man moving suspiciously at Kothapeta locality.

When they tried to intercept him, the man fled from the spot, prompting the police to conduct a quick inquiry in the area to see if anything was amiss. They then found that the man was a burglar who had broken open the door of a house, but had to abandon his plans after the patrol party noticing him.

Word of the incident soon spread in the area. A few hours later, on Tuesday morning, a woman from the same locality lodged a complaint with the police stating that about 100 gm of gold jewellery was stolen from her house on Monday night.

Police rushed to the spot and began searching for evidence.

They went through the woman’s safe, the contents of which were scattered across the room.

They then took down the woman’s version, categorising the ‘stolen’ jewellery.

The woman told police that except for the gold she was wearing, all the rest of her jewellery was stolen.

The police team then left, assuring the woman that all efforts would be made to recover her jewellery.

However, the woman’s version seemed to be too far stretched for the police. A team again made a sudden visit to the woman’s house on Tuesday night and after searching the safe once more, they found gold ornaments weighing 30 gm in addition to several pieces of artificial gold jewellery.

Stunned at the development, the woman reportedly confessed to the police that she tried to take advantage of the burglary attempt in the area, hoping that she would benefit from it somehow. A police officer said that on humanitarian grounds, the woman was let off with a stern warning to desist from such pranks in the future.
