A man shook a five-week-old baby until it was unconscious because the infant was crying and he wanted the boy to 'be a man'.

James Tipene, 33, has pleaded guilty in Victoria's County Court to one charge of recklessly causing serious injury after shaking the newborn at a home in Werribee, Melbourne in June 2018.

'It's like this rage, it has nothing to do with (the baby), it's like he has to be a warrior, a man,' Tipene said during a police interview.

The matter is before court for a plea hearing on Thursday when the boy's grandmother spoke about the effect of the assault.

The baby was shaken so hard by Tipene that he suffered injuries likely to cause developmental problems for the rest of the child's life, The Age reported.

He suffered bleeding to his brain, injuries to his eye and spine, and constant seizures.

Tipene woke his girlfriend up after shaking the baby and she urgently performed CPR before calling triple zero.

Police intercepted a phone call in September, during which Tipene admitted to his girlfriend that he shook the child.

'I did everything... I'm broken, regret, sad, frustrated at myself - hating myself, that's real,' Tipene said.

'That's someone actually giving in, to know they have done wrong. Accepting it to try and do something with hit - to try and be better.'
