120 CCTV cameras installed at Sundarapuram

Commissioner of Police Sumit Sharan inaugurated 120 CCTV cameras and an outpost of Podanur police station at Sundarapuram in the city here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sharan noted the importance of CCTV cameras in a populous city such as Coimbatore. The criminals involved in the Rathinapuri case were arrested using the footages from the local CCTV cameras, he said, referring to the arrest of six persons who posed as sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption and robbed a Kerala businessman of ₹13 lakh on July 17.

The 120 cameras will record footages in colour and high quality, which would help identify criminals better. These cameras would use Network Video Recorder (NVR) technology, which would allow the storage of footages up to 31 days as opposed to Digital Video Recorder (DVR) that allows storage only up to seven days, Podanur police said.

A renovated outpost under the Podanur station was also inaugurated by Mr. Sharan at Sundarapuram. Complaints from the public will be accepted at the new outpost and transferred to the Podanur station, according to the police.

L. Balaji Saravanan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) – Law and Order; P. Perumal, DCP – Crime and Traffic and Cedric Manuel, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Law and Order – West Subdivision) were present at the inauguration event. CCTV cameras will be installed throughout the city in the future, Mr. Saravanan said.
