NCSC seeks report on ex-Mayor’s murder

Police told to respond in three days

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of a report published in The Hindu on the murder of former Tirunelveli Mayor Uma Maheshwari and two others, and sought a report on the action taken by the police.

The Commission sought a detailed report from the Director-General of Police and the Tirunelveli Police Commissioner within three days.

According to the report, former Mayor and DMK leader Uma Maheshwari, her husband Murugasankaran and housemaid Mari, 30, were found dead in their house at Rose Nagar in Tirunelveli on Tuesday.

‘Murder for gain’

Commissioner of Police N. Bhaskaran had said it could be a case of murder for gain.

DMK president M.K. Stalin on Wednesday paid tributes to Uma Maheswari and her husband Murugasankaran. He met the deceased’s family in Tirunelveli.
