Bvuma lays down challenge to Khune at Chiefs

2019-07-25 19:44

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has challenged Itumeleng Khune to return to full fitness so they can compete equally for the number one position.

Khune, when fit, is the undisputed starting keeper for the Glamour Boys though he missed much of last season with a serious shoulder injury.

Currently, it appears Chiefs' three main shot-stoppers will be the 32-year-old, Bvuma as well as Nigeria international Daniel Akpeyi.

Nonetheless, the player, who was recently at the Africa Cup of Nations as Bafana Bafana's number three behind Darren Keet and Ronwen Williams, revealed the tough task a goalkeeper faces though he relishes the opportunity of challenging Khune.

The 24-year-old said: "For me, I didn't see any crisis. In this game, it's just that the thing is, with being a goalkeeper, when you make a mistake then it's a big thing.

"An in-field player, for instance, a striker, can miss 10 chances and score one and he'll be a 'hero'. But, as a goalkeeper, you can save 10 chances and miss one and they say, 'No, you're not a good keeper', because of one mistake.

"So, that's something that you need to understand. I believe we didn't have any goalkeeper crisis, it's just that one of our guys (Vries) were going through a difficult time, and as goalkeepers, we all go through that type of stuff.

"With everything that I got, including being in the AFCON, I believe I stand a good chance of competing with him (Khune).

"I believe that I stand a good chance of fighting for the number-one spot, so we-ll see what's going to happen.

"It's not that I'm playing now because he's injured, but I just can't wait for him to come back so that we can compete properly."
