CHENNAI: The country’s longest-serving woman prisoner, Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in the
Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, was released on 30-day parole (ordinary leave) on Thursday from the special prison for women in
Vellore.
It was after a nearly two-year legal battle for a six-month parole to make arrangements for the wedding of her daughter Charitha Sriharan, 27, Nalini succeeded to get a
Madras high court order in her favour on July 5. The court, however, granted her parole only for 30 days.
This is the third time she is being granted leave from prison. Earlier, she came out on parole for her brother Bhagyanathan’s marriage and later for her father’s funeral rites – on both occasions, for a day each.
A similar arrangement was made when another life convict in the Rajiv assassination case, Perarivalan, was released on parole for 60 days (from August 24, 2017). “We will come to a final decision on the scale of security based on the recommendation of the prison department,” the SP added.
Nalini will be staying in Sathuvachari in Vellore town along with her mother Padmavathy and other family members.
