The United Democratic Front and the Independent councillors have joined hands to move a no-confidence motion against B. Sujata, standing committee chairperson for education in Ottappalam municipality, who was an accused in a theft that took place in the municipal office a month ago.
Although the CPI(M) expelled her from the party after her arraignment in the theft case, she was yet to step down from her position.
Panel members
There are five members in the education standing committee. Two of them are CPI(M) members, one a UDF councillor and another a BJP member. An Independent is also part of the council.
Congress councillor Manoj Stephen and Independent councillor R. Rupa Unni approached the regional joint director for urban affairs demanding a no-trust vote.
If the move wins, the CPI(M) will lose one standing committee chairmanship in Ottappalam municipality.
Case registered
The police have registered a case against Ms. Sujata in connection with the theft of a purse belonging to the standing committee chairperson for public works.
