Wrexham have signed highly-rated defender Michael Chambers on a one-year deal.

Chambers, 25, has spent the summer attracting the attention of many clubs, including Wrexham and supporters may remember he featured in the friendly against Fleetwood Town earlier in the month .

Born in London, Chambers started his career with Dulwich Hamlet and impressed enough for Crystal Palace to splash out a £100,000 transfer fee for his services in 2012.

The centre-half spent time on-loan with Harrow Borough and Welling before returning to Hamlet in 2016.

The defender is Wrexham’s eighth signing this summer after manager Bryan Hughes brought in forwards JJ Hooper, Devonte Redmond, Leighton McIntosh and Mark Harris (the latter on a season long loan from Cardiff City) to give him more options in attack, as well as defensive midfielder Adam Barton , right-back Jazzi Barnum-Bobb and goalkeeper Dawid Szczepaniak .

On joining Wrexham, Chambers said: “I’m delighted to be here. I came in for a few days and played against Fleetwood and it felt right and felt conformable.

“I have been and played some games for EFL teams after that, and there was interested from them, but after being here and seeing the town and spending time with the other players, it was always in my mind that I wanted to sign here.”

Talking about his playing style he said: “I think I’m what they call a modern centre-half. I’m left sided and can get the ball down and play.”

Manager Hughes added: “I’m delighted about Michael signing. He had loads of interest from a lot of clubs in our league and from League Two, so it’s fantastic news that he is here and all signed up as a Wrexham player.

“He is a very good footballer, intelligent with the ball and a commanding defender who will give us balance being left-footed. He adds even more quality to what was already statistically the best defence in the league last season.”
