Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne will face trial early next year over the alleged rape of a 26-year-old woman.

The 31-year-old appeared in the Newcastle District Court on Thursday where he pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated sexual assault inflicting actual bodily harm. 

The charges are in relation to the alleged rape of a woman in the Hunter Region last September.  

The trial has been set for May 4 next year and it should run for about a week.

It has been alleged that Hayne had sex with the woman without her consent and bit her on the genitals so hard she bled. 

He will remain on bail until his trail begins. His bail conditions have been altered to allow the former player to report to police just once a week.

The two-time Dally M medallist returned to Newcastle for the court hearing, having recently relocated to Perth as part of six-month course at a religious college.

Hayne convinced a magistrate to vary his bail terms to let him relocate to Perth by highlighting the strict conditions of the course.

Two letters of support from the Christian group were presented to the court, noting it was fully aware of the charges against him. 

He is one of 10 students in his $6,580 Discipleship Training School class and about 600 study at the centre all up.

After three months of classes he will undertake missionary field work from October, though it was not clear how his legal situation would affect that.
