Perth mother rescues toddler seconds before their car is swallowed by a hole in Indonesia

A Perth mother rescued her toddler from a four-wheel-drive just seconds before the car was swallowed by a hole in the road in Indonesia.

Michael and Margie Rule were travelling through Indonesia on a trip around the world when the ground beneath them gave way, right next to excavation works for an underpass.

Footage of the incident shows the family's car stuck in heavy traffic in the city of Yogyakarta, located on the Indonesian island of Java, as the truck behind them topples into a sink hole next to the road.

"I just heard this strange noise behind us and I just yelled to Margie 'get out, get out quick and get Baz out'" Mr Rule said.

The video shows Margie Rule running out of the car to free 20-month-old Sebastian from his car seat while her husband climbs out of the car, escaping ten seconds before their vehicle tumbles down three metres into the hole.

Seven months into a world trip by Land Rover which the family documented on social media, the trio has driven in some dicey roads but it was in stationary traffic when the unthinkable happened.

"Never would we have thought we would be stationary in the city and falling into a hole like that," Mr Rule said.

"Our entire lives were in that car."

The family has had to put their upcoming trip to Borneo on hold for six wheeks while the Land Rover is being repaired.

However, they remain optimistic.

"A lot of unexpected things happen and you really just have to go with the flow," Mr Rule said.
