Punjab: Minority panel asks civic body to allot land for cemetery at Ladowal

LUDHIANA: Punjab state minority commission chief Munnawar Masih on Wednesday held a meeting with the officials of different departments of the Ludhiana district.
During the meeting Masih questioned the officials about delay in resolving the issue of cemetery for the Christian community and directed the officials to identify appropriate land for cemetery for Christians. It was decided to allot two acres of land at Ladowal in Ludhiana for this purpose.

Speaking to TOI Masih said, “From a long time the issue of cemetery and community hall for the christian community of Ludhiana hangs fire. The two-acre plot for the cemetery which was allotted to the community at Tajpur Road has been converted into a dump due to apathy of concerned departments which is not acceptable. On earlier occasions as well, we have instructed the concerned departments to do something about these, but no concrete step was taken. The municipal corporation has agreed to allot two acres land in Ladowal area for the cemetery and the officials, including the commissioner of the civic body, has assured us that very soon, the department will start a survey for land in Ladowal and once appropriate land is found, the cemetery will be built.”
According to Albert Dua, member of the state minority commission who was present, “During the meeting the chairman also took up the issue of the suicide of a youth of Christian community who was being harassed by a moneylender. Police officials have assured that within a week, action will be taken and culprits will be nabbed."
