CHENNAI: The
second rake of wagons carrying 2.75 million litres of water from
Jolarpet arrived in Villivakkam on Tuesday.
With this arrival,
Metrowater will get 5.50 million litres of water everyday to supply to the city.
A senior Metrowater official said the second set of rake from Kota in Rajasthan arrived in Jolarpet on Tuesday morning. After checking the wagons for leakage and other problems, water was filled in.
The wagons left Jolarpet around 9am and reached the dedicated ICF line near
Villivakkam railway station around 2pm. It took nearly four hours to decant the water at the dedicated ICF line near Villivakkam railway station.
After unloading the water, the wagons left for Jolarpet again towards the evening, said the Metrowater official.
The next rake which leaves the city for Jolarpet in the evening will reach the city at midnight. Right now this is the operation time of the water specials — one in day and one at night.
This water is mostly distributed to the central parts of the city. The areas include Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Perambur, Kolathur, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Egmore and a portion of Triplicane, the official said.
Water managers in the city have requested the railways to provide four rakes to transport 11 million litres of water every day to Chennai from Jolarpet.
“We are not sure whether the railways can be able to allow operation of four rakes a day to bring water to Chennai. Moreover, procurement of four rakes itself is not an easy task as they (railways) have to get it from western railways,” the official said.
