Hyderabad: Woman sets herself ablaze after alleged dowry harassment

HYDERABAD: After a 25-year-old housewife committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on Tuesday, her husband and in-laws were taken into custody for dowry harassment on Wednesday. A case was booked under dowry death at Bommalaramaram police station.
The victim, Marri Haimavathi, a resident of Rangapur village, got married to Shyam Sundar Reddy (30), who works at the agricultural field as a farmer along with his parents, in the year 2017. At the time of the wedding, the victim's family gave Rs 6 lakh cash and gold ornaments as dowry.
"The family of the victim has alleged that they were harassing her for additional dowry. It was also found that the victim was suffering from mental illness," said Bommalaramaram Inspector Madhu Babu.

On Tuesday, when Shyam along with his parents, Mohan Reddy and Rajamani Reddy went to the field for work the victim poured kerosene and set herself ablaze inside the bedroom.
When Shyam and his parents came back home at around 10.30am, found her charred body and alerted the police. While no suicide note was found the family of the victim suspect, she committed suicide because of the harassment by her husband and in-laws for additional dowry. After a case was registered under the dowry death case, police took Shyam and his parents into custody.
